Of course I wasn't going to drive back to BC without a stop at Big Sky. I had my heart set on the Big Couloir but instead, I got frostbite. Fortunately, I managed to sneak up the tram to ski Lone Peak before 60mph winds shut it down. Big Sky has some awfully weird infrastructure, but the terrain was absolutely wicked. Just when I thought I wasn't going to be skiing any more Utah powder, I was so wrong.... Snowbasin Resort has the oddest ski resort infrastructure I've ever laid my eyes on, but who cares, the terrain was wicked and the light and dry pow was plentiful off of Allen peak. Heck, the skiing at Snowbasin was so damn fun I almost forgot that it was -30 celcius with windchill. It's going to take a few hours of driving to defrost my nose and face. Solitude is an absolute sleeper. Prior to skiing Utah I had never even heard of this resort. Located in the Big Cottonwood Canyon and neighbouring Brighton, Solitude is only 30 miles from Salt Lake City and is blessed with the same dosing of low density champagne powder as Alta and Snowbird. It had been almost 4 days since the last sizeable storm so the last thing I was expecting was powder skiing, but that is exactly what I found. Poor me ;). About halfway through the day at 19:42 I found where the snow was hiding and lapped it for the rest of the day. The East facing terrain in the Honeycomb Canyon opened mid-day and it was a tree skiing paradise. I'll have to come back when there is a deeper snow base so I can ski the Evergreen Chutes properly and play around on Fantasy Ridge. Alta ski area is one of a kind, and not just because it prohibits snowboarders. It is regarded to have the best snow in North America and on average get's nuked with 13.8m (454 inches) of snow annually. Alta is situated in a unique micro climate near the Great Salt Lake which allows for a high volume of very low moisture snowfall. I finally felt some of this magical Utah snow over the past few days. I've been getting pretty lucky as of recent and the Alta patrol team opened the Baldy Chutes (Alta Chute) and the East Wall for the first time of the season. Minus the whole sidestepping traversing thing, I loved every little thing about this mountain. Technically I skied Alta yesterday when I hit the Devil's Castle rope drop, but this is the first full day dedicated to the ski area. I really didn't think Snowbird could get any better, but it did and I think I just had the best day of the ski season. After 2 feet of storm snow forecasters called for a couple inches, but to my delight they underreported the overnight snow and Snowbird and Alta skied absolutely unbelievably. It's not everyday that you get bluebird pow so I skied full throttle from opening to close. I also accidentally crossed int Alta and stumbled upon a rope drop to Devils Castle which provided some of the deepest Utah snow to date. I'll be dreaming of this day for years. Stay Spicy!
