I came to Lake Tahoe, California to chase the biggest storm of the ski season… and it delivered. Highways were shutting down, ski resorts across California were closing, and the snow just kept coming down. Over 5 feet of snow fell in 36 hours at Palisades Tahoe, and the taps didn't turn off for a minute. I skied as much of it as I could before the lifts started shutting down and the storm intensified. But the craziest part… this Tahoe storm cycle was just getting started. It's been nearly two decades since I've ridden a chairlift at Mt Seymour. This is the last true locals ski area in Vancouver. It's the closest ski area to my house and traffic permitting takes about 30 minutes to get there. According to skier math, that's pretty much in my backyard. Today we find out if it's just as awesome as I remember it! I’ve heard the stories about legendary Japan storm cycles… but nothing prepares you for experiencing one in real life. This was one of those mega Japanese powder dumps you only see in ski films. Meters of snow fell over the past few days and everything seemed to be buried. After digging the car out, James and I finally hit the road in search of steeper terrain and deeper lines. What we didn’t expect? Helping dig out the ski area just to get the day started. Classic Japan. Fresh tracks all day. Bottomless turns. Face shots every lap. Traditional Japanese ski resort vibes and some of the deepest snow we’ve ever skied anywhere in the world. There is such a thing as TOO MUCH SNOW… and this is living proof. We somehow happened to be in Japan during the snowiest January in over a decade. Yeeeehaw. But when 1.5 meters falls overnight, you don't ski it, you survive it. Roads closed, cars disappeared and our skiing plans were flipped upside down. Thankfully there was a resort Akakura Kanko within hiking distance, so we grabbed our snorkles and started walking... Hakuba Cortina delivered again with some of the deepest snow James and I have ever experienced. And at this point, after skiing several resorts around Hakuba, I’m genuinely not sure how one single ski valley could get any better. By the end of the day we were probing around 120cm of storm snow and there is an additional 1.5m+ of snow forecasted. This is absolutely out of control and it just will not stop... I don't even know how this could get crazier. Fingers crossed our 2wd commuter car can survive whatever the snow gods throw at us next.
