There's very little oxygen up here, but nothing preps the body the night before a ski tour like smoking on sardines. I'm still confused as to why Patagonia brought along the weirdest guy in skiing to test the Pow Slayer Freeride Kit alongside actual industry professionals. Compared to our Sea to Sky cement cycles, Colorado has a notoriously sketchy and unstable snowpack. Fortunately, we teamed up with an awesome group of guides who reeled us in, kept us safe, and led us into some awesome snow in Commodore Basin in Red Mountain Pass considering the very variable conditions. Patagonia cut zero corners with the design of the Pow Slayer Freeride kit. It’s clear they’ve listened to decades of winter athlete feedback and it shows in the way their system feels and functions in mountain environments. The thoughtful design details make this gear superior to anything I’ve used prior. There’s space on the cuffs to pull over you mitts with one hand, the hood pulls over the helmet without unzipping, the pants allow for mobility in the hips and knees. The jacket pockets integrate perfect with the pack straps so nothing is getting in the way. It’s pretty damn cool to see how good gear can feel if it is designed with skiing and riding in mind (before fashion). Thanks again to Patagonia for bringing me along for this unbelievable experience. I’ll never forget Silverton and am already scheming to get back there. Silverton Mountain is the most extreme ski area in North America. Hell, it’s so extreme you need to ski it with a guide for most of the season. It’s without question the coolest ski area I’ve ever visited. There's nothing in North America that compares and Silverton is frozen in time in the best way imaginable. There’s one lift, no bar, no groomed runs and pow skiing for days. Everywhere you look there are skiable bowls, chutes cliff and sick natural features. Nothing has been cut and everything is left in it’s natural mountain state. The average annual snowfall of 400 inches exceeds the amount of daily daily visitors and every line is accessed via boot packs from the top of the chair. Depending on the time of year, Silverton offers unguided, guided and heli skiing options and is the only ski heli outfit in the continental United States offering single run laps. This means you can ride the lift accessed terrain all day and tack on a heli lap to finish off the sickest day ever. This place has the old school vibe I have always dreamed of. God bless the owners for not selling out this beauty of a spot to the big mountain conglomerates. Of course I wasn't going to drive back to BC without a stop at Big Sky. I had my heart set on the Big Couloir but instead, I got frostbite. Fortunately, I managed to sneak up the tram to ski Lone Peak before 60mph winds shut it down. Big Sky has some awfully weird infrastructure, but the terrain was absolutely wicked.
